How we fell in love with this cliff

Our Founder Story

In 2002, Lacam Lodge began not as a business idea, but as a friendship.

One evening, over a simple meal of goat and Irish potatoes, a close friend said, “Tomorrow, I’ll show you the land.” That land, perched on the cliffs by Sipi Falls, would one day become Lacam Lodge. At the time, it was wild and untouched – there were no paths, no fences - getting to the spot where the waterfall crashes down took a lot of scrambling through dense bushes and undergrowth – whilst not looking down!

Standing there, surrounded by the natural terraces and breathtaking views, the thought was simple: What if we cleared a space, built some small bandas so, Mzee Stephen could rent them out.

That small dream grew slowly, carefully, and always with respect for the land and the people. With Stephen’s blessing, a terrace was dug and the first banda was raised – built with poles and offcuts from the forest nearby and thatched with grass from the plains below.  With Tim and Diego sketching ideas on napkins, and Felice’s (Diego’s father and one of the founding directors) meticulous engineering oversight, more rooms followed, each blending into the cliffside, each one telling the story of a shared vision.

Our journey building

A wooden house on stilts surrounded by trees and lush green vegetation in a rural setting, with a hilly landscape in the background and a fence made of bamboo or wood.

From the start, everything was sourced locally - vegetables, firewood, crafts.

We invested in education, providing financial support for children to go to school with the promise that if they worked hard and brought back good reports, they could join the Lacam family. One of those children went on to become a Member of Parliament, while Joel joined the Uganda Wildlife Authority before returning to Sipi to set up his own coffee business.

Lacam Lodge is not just built on a cliff. It is built on trust, on shared meals, on families, and on generations learning and growing together.

It’s about heritage - rooted in the Sabine community, carried forward by the people who live and work here.

Lacam 2.0

A lush green landscape with a waterfall on the left side and trees surrounding a small rustic hut on a hillside.

What began as one banda by the waterfall has grown into a lodge that welcomes travelers from around the world.

Lacam is now in its second chapter Lacam 2.0 - but its spirit remains the same: a family lodge, created from friendship, community, and the simple joy of sharing a view so beautiful, it takes your breath away.

We look forward to sharing our cliff paradise with you!
