The Heart of Sipi: Coffee

Joel’s Coffee Experience

Discover Sipi Coffee

Sipi is more than waterfalls and views, it is also one of Uganda’s most famous coffee regions. On the fertile slopes of Mount Elgon, farmers grow Arabica coffee, known worldwide for its smooth taste, rich aroma, and fruity notes.

The Heart of Arabica in Uganda

  • Coffee was introduced to Mount Elgon in the early 1900s and has become the backbone of the local economy.

  • Sipi’s high altitude (1,600–1,900m above sea level) and volcanic soils make it one of the best places in Uganda for high-quality Arabica.

  • Most of the coffee is shade-grown under banana and tree canopies, which helps protect biodiversity and gives the beans their unique flavor.

  • Harvesting is done by hand, with families carefully selecting ripe red cherries.

Coffee as a Way of Life

For generations, coffee has been part of daily life in Eastern Uganda. Farmers don’t just grow it for export, they roast, grind, and brew it at home, often over a fire, sharing cups with friends and neighbors.

At Lacam Lodge, we invite you to experience this tradition first-hand with Joel:

  • Walk through coffee farms with our experienced and passionate local guide, Joel.

  • Learn how cherries are picked, washed, and dried in the sun.

  • Try your hand at roasting beans the traditional way.

  • Enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee, made by you, with views of Sipi Falls.

Joel’s Farm Experience:

Why Sipi Coffee is Special

Uganda is Africa’s leading exporter of Robusta coffee, but Sipi’s Arabica stands apart. It is highly sought after by international buyers and is often used in specialty blends around the world. Its flavor profile is smooth, bright, and slightly citrusy, a true reflection of the mountain and its people.

For us, coffee is not just a drink, it is a story of land, culture, and community. And here at Sipi, every cup tells that story. Join us to experience this unique farm with Joel and discover the journey of coffee in Sipi!
